Andre Braugher
January 15, 2001

TV Guide Online: Tonight we are talking with Andre Braugher about his newest series Gideon's Crossing. Hi Andre! Thanks for joining us this evening!

Braugher: Hello everyone. Thanks for having me.

Question: It's a wonderful medical drama and I love you at the helm. Will we be seeing more of Dr. Gideon's personal life?

Braugher: I believe we'll be seeing more of Dr. Gideon's personal life. It's the kind of thing we'll be layering slowly. We'll be seeing more the ensemble's life. More of Dr. Boyle and Dr. Klein. Her love affairs and such. More of the Gideon's household. It has to develop slowly or else we'll become a nighttime soap.

Question: Any more cast changes coming up?

Braugher: None that I foresee. We'll be expanding the cast cause we'll be showing the cast of the hospital and a new nurse practitioner who's name is Money Raspberry Dupree. She has a 3 episode arc coming up in the next two months.

Question: How much input do you have in the show?

Braugher: In terms of story development I'm keep aware of how the stories are developing. We have a whole cast of writers. I'm pretty much aware of the cast and guest starts. I want it to develop slow. We've only seen a few dimensions of Dr. Gideon. We'll see a few more as the year progresses.

Question: Hello Andre. First off, I think you are a great actor and that Homicide is one of the best television shows of all time. Of all the characters you have portrayed, which one do you identify with the most?

Braugher: Thank You. I'm actually not very much like either one of the these guys, but there is a part of me in both of them. I would have to say, wow... or I'm trying to identify with Dr. Gideon. The loving, intelligent, fiercely devoted character. I'm trying to shy away from the rough and tumble cop aspects. So Dr. Gideon is the person I identify with most.

Question: Why did the show kill off the English doctor?

Braugher: I actually don't have a very good explanation for that. Speculating of course, I'd have to say it had to do with the development of her character. The interns are going through a trial by fire. I didn't see the same dilemmas with Wyatt than with her. No one could come up with a compelling storyline for her involvement. We couldn't find a good compelling storyline for her character.

Question: ARE THEY PLANNING A SECOND SEASON. I LOVE YOUR SHOW, BUT HATE THEY MOVED YOU TO MONDAY. I TRY TO SEE ALL YOUR MOVIES ARE YOU WORKING ON ANYTHING NOW?

Braugher: As far as we know we are going to be picked up for a second season. But the contract for my services between SAG and television. So we don't know when we will be doing the second season. So without actors it's hard to do television.

Question: Are there any plans for your to direct or write an episode?

Braugher: Writing no. I'm interested in directing. Perhaps next year. I think in the first year, I'm devoting my attention to the kind of character that can be sustained. That and the fact that I live on East Coast and work on the West coast. To direct right now would put a crimp in my plans.

Question: What's tonight episode going to be about??

Braugher: It's about an infectious outbreak. It's about Gideon and several other doctors trying to identify the source. Also an investigation into all the facts of the Porter case begins.

Question: I have admired and respected your work in tv and film from the strong roles you have portrayed but what do you think of the networks poor representation of African Americans?

Braugher: Well I think it's, in my opinion it's misguided. Television that doesn't reflect a world we live in is waiting to be buried. I don't think television is meant to craft a reality that is not around us. Unfortunately, people have been abandoning television for years. So networks are fighting over a smaller piece of the pie. So it's the same stories with the same people. So consequently you're going to turn out the same product and people are going to turn away from it. So until the networks come to their senses, we're going to continue to see a skewed version of the story. As far as African Americans behind the cameras is an evolutionary process. My work on the show is a culmination. So the producers and the people behind the camera are developing an artist process. It would take a quantum leap. So what I see now is a steady progress. Minorities of all colors. It's an evolutionary process.

Question: Is the porter case going to be an ongoing storyline?

Braugher: Yes until it's culmination several episodes down the line. Until it's revealed to everyone, we'll investigate. The stories will line up and the issues will come to a head. Any hospital that's suspected of a cover-up is always under suspicion. We're probably going to settle this case.

Question
: where did you study, you have such an intense, compelling way of drawing us in....1st on Homicide...and now Gideon?

Braugher: I received a BA in drama from Stanford University in 1984. And a MFA from Julliard in 1988.

Question: Is Eric Overmyer writing any more scripts this series?

Braugher
: He's written if I'm not mistaken 4 of them. The first was "Routine Case of Asthma". "Clinical Enigma" which aired recently. As well as "Freak Show", maybe? His most recent is one we're working on now. It's is the episode we're about to do. I think it's four all together. I can't think of the title of the last episode.

Question: Will your wife be on the show?

Braugher: I don't think so. She's pretty much taking care of things back home. And pursuing her craft in the New York area. That's why we moved out from Baltimore. We were away from New York for five years.

Question: I am in awe of your work. Will you be doing any live work in the NY area?

Braugher: I haven't been onstage since 1996 when I did Henry the V out in the Delacourt Park in New York City. I don't have any immediate plans. I've felt like I wanted to be back on stage for the last few years, but I've been working continuously. Hopefully, I'll get an opportunity to get back during the summer of 2001. If not there is always the summer of 2002.

Question: Andre what do you do for fun???

Braugher: Well, I like doing things that are easy to see that they've been completed. I like outdoors work. I like gardening. Planting things, pulling up things. Hammering things. Only cause you can see at the end of the day it's done. I work in a business where at the end of the day its' rarely done. My hobbies revolve around verifiably done things.

Question: What do you think of your Golden Globe nomination?

Braugher: It feels great. This is what I've been working so hard all these years to get. It feels terrific that a very well read and well traveled group of writers felt me worthy of their notice. I'm looking forward to it. My wife and I are going out to LA together to attend the actual show.

Question: How many shows do you do in a season. The season seems so short and then they show re-runs for what seems like forever.....

Braugher: We're doing 21 episodes this season. It takes us about 8 or 9 months to film those episodes.

Question: Hi Mr. Braugher! I'd like to say what an honor it is to be talking with you. I really enjoyed your character in City of Angels. I was wondering what it was like for you to play such a part.

Braugher: I had a lot of fun doing City of Angels. Playing my idea of an angel was a very interesting spiritual exercise. Angels are not subject to the same laws that humans are. Being immortal and timeless, human needs and things that make us humans now, angels aren't subject to those conditions. I was playing a person who lived for the pleasure of spiritual contact. I worked with Nic Cage and I think I did the kind of work I've been trying to do in my career. The work that is simple and easy and genuine between people. I'm striving for a state of non-acting in my acting. City of Angels was as close as I came to that. I'm reaching back to that again. To see what I can do.

TV Guide Online: Thank you Andre! We'll be watching, and please come back soon!!!

Braugher: Goodbye, thank you very much for having me. It's been quite a pleasure. I look forward to the next occasion when I can chat with you online.

TV Guide Online: Gideon's Crossing airs every Monday night at 10PMET on ABC!!!
